  1.                         GAYTEEN POLICY
  2.                  Rules as of January 1, 1993

  5. 1) PURPOSE:
  6.         The purpose of GAYTEEN is to provide a forum for the discussion by 
  7. teens of the concerns by teens relating to a homosexual sexuality. Many of 
  8. the participants are teens who have already come to terms with their 
  9. sexuality. Other participants are teens who are "exploring their options" 
  10. and want to learn more about the homosexual lifestyle.

  13. 2) ACCESS:
  14.         GAYTEEN is an International Fidonet Backbone Echo which is 
  15. available to any BBS which can receive echoes from the Fidonet Backbone. It 
  16. is preferred that Sysops allow ALL teen callers access to the echo 
  17. (including first-time callers) for reading purposes. If your software 
  18. supports a different security level for writing messages, it is preferred 
  19. that writing privileges be withheld until you are comfortable enough that 
  20. the user will not be violating these rules, since the Sysop is ultimately 
  21. responsible for all messages leaving his/her BBS.  Sysops are requested to 
  22. try to insure that ONLY those people under the age of 20 will have access 
  23. to the echo. Otherwise, no one should be barred from the echo because of 
  24. age, sexuality, or any other criteria, as long as they abide by these 
  25. rules.

  27. 3) USER NAMES:
  28.         The decision as to the form of name required for use in the 
  29. conference is left to the individual sysop of each participating BBS. 
  30. This means that some systems may allow handles while others might not. 
  31.         When handles are permitted, they should be of two parts, so as 
  32. to form a name which could pass as a possible real name. Handles may not 
  33. bear sexual connotations or innuendoes; nor contain terms which are 
  34. offensive in polite society. Handles may not be a common name that would be 
  35. easily selectable by several different people, thus causing problems with 
  36. mail delivery.

  38. 4) MESSAGE CONSTRUCTION:
  39.         a)  High ASCII characters are discouraged in Fidonet because of 
  40. the problems they can cause to mailers, packers, and even non-IBM 
  41. machines. They are not tolerated in this echo.
  42.         b)  ALL CAPITAL LETTERS HAVE THE EFFECT OF SHOUTING. It is also 
  43. an illiterate style. Please do not shout or be illiterate.
  44.         c)  The official language of GAYTEEN is English and messages 
  45. should only contain English language.
  46.         d)  Private messages are not permitted since the Fidonet Backbone 
  47. does not support them.
  48.         e)  The 'From:' line must either be a real name, or a 
  49. non-offensive pseudonym. The word SYSOP is not allowed in the 'From:" 
  50. line.

  52. 5) MESSAGE CONTENT:
  53.         a) Messages will not contain profanity or words defined in 
  54. Webster's dictionary as obscene. If you wouldn't use the word in front 
  55. of your grandmother, then don't use it here.
  56.         b)  Messages will not depict or describe sexual acts of any kind 
  57. or 'How to' messages designed to improve performance. 
  58.             EXCEPTION: Messages couched in formal medical terminology 
  59. whose primary purpose is to promote safe sex are allowed as long as they 
  60. do not appeal to a person's prurient interests.
  61.         c)  Messages will not promote, advocate or otherwise encourage 
  62. the use of illegal substances, the conduct of illegal acts or the 
  63. abuse of various substances or things (i.e. alcohol, children, etc).
  64.         d)  This echo is for civilized, reasonably mature discussions.
  65. Messages will not be inflammatory or abusive toward, or about, anyone, 
  66. or anything.
  67.         e)  No advertising of any kind is permitted. This particularly 
  68. includes messages telling the world what you are looking for, either as 
  69. a lover, or as a 'one-night stand'.
  70.         f)  Phone numbers and addresses are not permitted, under any 
  71. circumstances. BBS and other computer numbers are also prohibited. 
  72. Origin lines MUST have a valid Fidonet address in them.  
  73.         g)  Messages MUST be on-topic. To be on-topic, a message must be 
  74. discussing the aspects of teen-agers who either are gay, or may be gay. The 
  75. world, at large, is continually bombarded by negative-ness about being gay. 
  76. The main purpose of this echo is to counteract those situations - to 
  77. provide a 'safe haven' type of atmosphere, particularly for teens who are 
  78. curious about what it is like to be gay; teens who are just begining to 
  79. come to terms with their own sexuality.
  80.             NOTE: Threads will frequently start out on-topic and quickly 
  81. drift to something else. It is the responsibility of each participant to 
  82. recognize this and either steer the thread back on-topic, or to end the 
  83. thread.
  84.         h)  Messages must be of interest to all readers. One-on-one 
  85. messages between a few people are not permitted.

  87. 6) MESSAGE QUOTING:
  88.         The quoting of a SMALL portion of the message you are replying 
  89. to is encouraged to establish the context of your reply. However, the 
  90. quoting of large portions of the message is discouraged. Quoting of the 
  91. SEEN-BY lines and PATHS is prohibited, since this messes up some of the 
  92. Fidonet mailers and packers.

  94. 7) VIOLATION OF THE RULES:
  95.         If another person has violated the rules, or made some 
  96. inappropriate comment, refrain from responding IN the echo. We don't 
  97. need several people responding to one violation, causing a lot of 
  98. unnecessary messages. It is the Moderator's job to deal with this, and 
  99. it will frequently be done behind the scenes.
  100.         Violators will be dealt with in accordance with the then 
  101. currently active Fidonet Echo Policy.

  103. 8) ANNOYING BEHAVIOR:
  104.         Fidonet policy details (and prohibits) annoying behavior. 
  105. Annoying behavior by anyone in the GAYTEEN conference shall not be 
  106. allowed. According to the Webster's New World Dictionary of the American 
  107. Language: 
  108. annoy - to irritate, bother, etc as by a repeated action.

  110. 9) COMPLAINTS & CRITICISMS:
  111.         Complaints and criticisms (both good and bad) are Off-Topic in 
  112. the conference and will not be tolerated. You can netmail them to the 
  113. Moderator. Netmail that is coherent and rational will be responded to; 
  114. otherwise I will use my delete key. Complaints and criticisms are also 
  115. expected to contain suggested ways to correct the situation. This also 
  116. applies to suggested amendments to these rules. Proposed amendments are 
  117. off-topic in the echo. Ask your local Sysop for more information about 
  118. sending Netmail to me.

  120. 10) PRECEDENCE:
  121.         Should any item in this set of rules be in direct contradiction 
  122. with that of the current Fidonet Policy (presently Policy 4), Fidonet 
  123. Echo Policy, or any other upper Fidonet policy currently in existence or 
  124. to be released in the future, then the rules as stated in said upper 
  125. level document shall apply in lieu of that of this document.

  127. 11) AUTHORITY:
  128.         The Moderator has the sole authority to determine who is, and 
  129. who is not violating these rules. The Moderator's interpretation of the 
  130. rules will be the final decision. 
  131.         Anyone who does not agree to these rules CAN NOT participate in 
  132. the GAYTEEN Echo. The first posting of a message by a person in this 
  133. echo constitutes his/her total acceptance of the rules.
